NYC Open Mic Joint w/Host Nathan P. @ The Nuyorican Poets Café - Tuesday, Jan. 3

The first Tuesday night of every month, Mike Geffner Presents The Inspired Word and the famed Nuyorican Poets Café in Manhattan’s East Village join forces to present the NYC Open Mic Joint, hosted by former Nuyorican Slam Master Nathan P.

*****

The Inspired Word’s NYC Open Mic Joint marks the long-awaited return of Nuyorican Poets Café legend Nathan P. as host, instantly separating it from any other open mic in the Big Apple.

Known back in the day with great reverence as the Slam Master, as well as the sharpet dresser in spoken word, Nathan P. hosted either the Wednesday or Friday night slam at the Nuyo from 2000 to 2007, introducing audiences to the likes of such up-and-comers as Oveous Maximus and Carlos Andrés Gómez.

Now, coming out of hosting retirement but still with funky cool fedoras, sharp-looking pinstriped suits, and one-of-a-kind cufflinks, he brings a special class and style to a special kind of open mic. As Nathan P. will tell you before every show, “The Open Mic Joint isn’t your father’s open mic. Noooooooooo. Trust me, it’s not like any other open mic you’ve ever seen before.”

And once you experience it for a single night, you’ll see for yourself. Be forewarned: The vibe is totally addictive.

It’s open to all types of artists - comedians, musicians, storytellers, singers, poets, fiction/nonfiction writers, playwrights, spoken word artists, performance artists, dancers, ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.

So, if you’re looking for a cool downtown spot to do your thing, this is definitely the place.

All you have to do is bring the talent, we’ll bring the rest.

25 slots, 5-minute time limit.

BIOS:

Poet, playwright, and performer, PETER CARLAFTES began his entertainment career on the playground of the Bronx and, after seeing the world, branched out to Manhattan. He is the author of three books: Drunkyard Dog, Triumph for Rent, and A Year on Facebook—all published by Three Rooms Press.

SHARON MESMER’s many poetry and fiction publications include The Virgin Formica (Hanging Loose, 2008), Annoying Diabetic Bitch (Combo Books, 2008), and Ma Vie à Yonago (in French translation from Hachette Littératures, 2005). Sharon is a member of the flarf collective.

ROBERTO F. SANTIAGO writes placing pen to paper and fingertips to QWERTY all as an act of translation. Within poetry, he has discovered a booming collective of voices and a rickety soapbox for his multiple identities whereupon he can shout obscenities and prayers at the same time. Roberto also writes and produces music, and has been known to dance until he rips his pants.

JOHN J. TRAUSE is co-founder of the William Carlos Williams Poetry Cooperative in Rutherford, NJ, and the author of Seriously Serial, and Latter-Day Litany—the latter staged off-off Broadway. John has performed with Steven Van Zandt, Anne Waldman, and Karen Finley for the City Lights Books celebration at the Poetry Project, NYC.

EMILY KAGAN TRENCHARD began writing poetry while at the University of California, Berkeley. She now lives in Brooklyn and is co-curator of the renowned louderARTS Project Reading Series. A featured writer and performer at numerous reading series and universities across the country, and was a part of Def Poetry Jam’s seasons 3 and 4.

GEORGE WALLACE is author of twenty poetry collections, including Poppin’ Johnny (Three Rooms Press, 2010), Summer of Love Summer of Love (Shivastan Press, 2010), and Jumping Over The Moon (Boone’s Dock Press, 2011). Writer in residence at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Wet Hills, NY, George appears throughout the US and in Europe to perform, lecture, and conduct poetry workshops.

JANE ORMEROD is the author of the full-length poetry collection, Recreational Vehicles on Fire (Three Rooms Press, 2009), the chapbook 11 Films (Modern Metrics/EXOT Books, 2008), and the spoken word CD Nashville Invades Manhattan. 4-Time HBO Def Poet Kevin Coval on L-vis Lives! Book Tour + Singer NaJah Lewis + Open Mic - Thursday, Sept. 1

Mike Geffner Presents The Inspired Word features 4-time HBO Def Poetry star Kevin Coval celebrating the September release of his book, L-vis Lives: Racemusic Poems.

In addition to Kevin, we have special guest 17-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist NaJah Lewis + a 15-slot open mic open to ALL types of artists.

Hosted by 3-time Def Poet Gemineye.

*****

Kevin Coval is the author of ALA “Book of the Year” finalist Slingshots: A Hip-Hop Poetica, a collection titled Everyday People, and L-Vis Lives: Racemusic Poems (forthcoming). He is co-founder and Artistic Director of Louder Than a Bomb: The Chicago Teen Poetry Festival, subject of an award-winning documentary of the same name, premiering on the Oprah Winfrey Network October 2011. A regular contributor to Chicago Public Radio, and a four-time HBO Def Poet, Coval teaches at the School of the Art Institute and in high schools around Chicago.

L-vis Lives! is a bold new collection of poetry and prose exploring the collision of race, art, and appropriation in hip hop culture. L-vis is an imagined persona: a representation of artists who have used and misused Black music. Like so many others who gained fame and fortune from their sampling, L-vis is as much a sincere artist as he is a thief. In Kevin Coval's poems, L-vis' story is equal parts autobiography, forgotten history, and re-imaginings. We see shades of Elvis Presley, the Beastie Boys, and Eminem, and meet some of history's more obscure “whiteboy” heroes and anti-heroes: legendary breakdancers, political activists, and music impresarios. A story of both artistic theft and radical invention, L-vis Lives! is a poetic novella on all of the possibilities and problems of “post-racial” American culture.

You can order the book through this link - http://www.haymarketbooks.org/pb/L-vis-Lives

*****

Props for L-vis Lives!

"...part social aesthetic-activist determined to continue the Unfinished, Collected Works of John Brown, Coval has proven, at a time when many poets use metaphor and restraint to tiptoe around the tough issues of identity and borrowed race, that most L-vises have Souls."
—Thomas Sayers Ellis, author, Skin, Inc.: Identity Repair Poems

“Nothing like it has ever been written. No one really talks about these white men of color. No one considers their origins or the source of their craving. No one has bothered to label this pursuit of Blackness a meaningful tribute or a persistent dysfunction. L-vis Lives! is a cultural touchstone, a book that will easily move into a space that’s been waiting for much too long.”
—Patricia Smith, author, Blood Dazzler, finalist for the National Book Award

"Tough and smart, real and surreal, aching and funny, in-the-tradition and startlingly original, the trials of L-Vis show us the challenges of giving up on whiteness--a process at once monumentally hard, too easy, and absolutely necessary."
—David Roediger, author, How Race Survived U.S. History

Born in Detroit but moving to New York City to pursue a musical career, NaJah Lewis is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist who recently won first place in a talent search competition. She has performed at the Thalia Cafe/Symphony Space, Lenox Lounge, Brooklyn Nights, Electric Relaxation, and Knaps. She was the youngest vocalist selected to perform as part of the Women in Jazz Showcase at this year's International Arts Festival.

She is currently at work on her young adult novel Seventeen Seasons, to be published by Penguin/ Putnam. Her ode to the late folk legend Odetta is available from Scholastic as a picture book. Veronica Golos won the 16th annual Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize (Story Line Press) for her book, A Bell Buried Deep (to be re-issued by Red Hen Press), and is the author of Vocabulary of Silence (Red Hen Press, 2011). An award-winning curator and teacher for Poets & Writers, Poet’s House and 92nd St Y/Makor in New York City, Ms.Golos’ work has been published and anthologized nationally and internationally, and adapted for theatrical productions in New York City’s Theatre Row, and the Claremont Theological Seminary in California. Her alluringly haunting voice of distinction appeals to fans similar to those of Linda Thompson, Michelle Shocked, Jeff Tweedy, Sinead O’Connor, Jessie Mae Hemphill along with the music world’s most famous Bobs; Dylan and Marley. She pursued song-writing and performing at the age of 19, while a member of the husband-and-wife team, Bella Sun. Her relatively early marriage wasn’t a surprise, the oldest girl in a strict Christian family of five children, she was domestic as well as ambitious — she pretty much raised her siblings and, as Valerie says: “Granddad always feared for my hips because I always had a baby on ’em.” For more info on Ms. June, please visit http://valeriejune.com/
