She's known for both her cutting and positive words, taking on human nature, popular culture, and the challenging nexus between love and relationships. She is the founder/producer of Epic XII, a unique quarterly performance event featuring 12 collaborations between musicians and poets, and is the Director of Community Relations for The Inspired Word. Angelo Daniel Giokas is a hybrid painter and aesthetic voyager from Queens, New York. His raw and unique style is the result of his combination of appropriation, collage, mixed media, and visual poetry. He enjoys exploring the synergistic relationships between images, prints, photographs, and magazines, and works in effort to associate artistic process with product, and insight with magical thinking. Though he graduated Cum Laude from Siena College, his artistry and theories were mostly self-taught. His experience studying intermedia art at University of London, Goldsmiths College was the most enriching and inspirational time in his young career. A product of the streets of South Philadelphia, Phillip Giambri aka “The Ancient Mariner” obtained his deviant perspective on life listening to Jean Shepherd on WOR radio back in the ‘50s. Fleeing Philly at seventeen, he served in the military, has been an actor, hairstylist, stoner, janitor, writer, drifter, recording engineer, hired hand, poet, traveling salesman, barfly, banker, biker, bronco buster, announcer, mail-order minister, photographer, and “Computer Guru." He arrived in NY City in ’68, joined the Hippie pilgrimage to St. Marks Place, and never left. He’s attended too many schools to mention, studying nearly everything, without ever attaining a degree in anything. He produces and hosts a popular monthly spoken word/poetry event, Rimes of The Ancient Mariner as well as special collaborative events with other artist/performers; most recently the very successful, Barflies & Broken Angels. His website “Ancient Mariner Tales” offers bored web surfers a glimpse into his futile search for self-discovery and meaning. He can be found in downtown NYC, regularly spinning yarns and telling tall tales anywhere that will tolerate him.

The Haiku Guys are a traveling duo of poets who want to write you a haiku, anytime, anywhere. They have turned a hobby of writing #freehaiku for the people they meet on the streets of Brooklyn into a bigger mission of making haiku a thing. Erick Szentmiklosy and Daniel Zaltsman, who met at college orientation and turned from friends to brothers to business partners, want to help people communicate in a more mindful way in their everyday lives and think haiku is the means for attaining this shift in the way we intercourse with people every day. They do this by getting hired to write at parties around the U.S. The more parties they attend, the more people they reach face-to-face and write custom haiku on the spot for. Just give them a topic and they'll channel your vision through them into a typewritten haiku. You go home with a poem. Wheather it's a wedding, festival, company party or just a gathering of friends at home, they want to be there, sharing their story and haiku with you and your guests.

Hala Alyan is a Palestinian-American poet whose work has appeared in several journals, including Copper Nickel, Third Coast, and The Journal. She resides in Manhattan.

Mary McLaughlin Slechta is the author of Wreckage on a Watery Moon (FootHills) and two chapbooks. She’s recently published in The Understanding Between Foxes and Light, Black Magnolias,Worker’s Write, and Red Savina Review. Her adventure series with Night Owl Press is planned for release in 2014. She is the 2014 guest prose editor for I Let Go of the Stars in My Hand.

10 Questions with...NYC Poet Aimee Herman

Bookmark and Share

Aimee Herman will be one of the featured poets in(as well as the host of) Raining Words: A Spring Poetry Extravaganza on Saturday, April 12 @ The Pomegrante Gallery, produced by 3Po3try NYC (https://www.facebook.com/3po3trynyc).

Herman is a performance artist, poet and teacher with an MFA in Creative Writing from Long Island University in Brooklyn, as well as a longtime Inspired Word host. She teaches at Bronx Community College and is a faculty member with Poetry Teachers NYC, offering affordable poetry workshops and creating spaces for other performers to lift their words off the page. She has been published in various journals and anthologies such as: Troubling the Line: Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics (Nightboat Books) and The Understanding Between Foxes and Light (great weather for MEDIA). Her full-length book of poems to go without blinking was published in 2012 by BlazeVOX books. She can be found wrapped in caution tape in Brooklyn or at aimeeherman.wordpress.com.

The following is our quick 10-question interview with Ms. Herman, who like poet e.e. cummings believes in writing all in lowercase:

What one word describes your writing style?

experimentallyserrated.

What's your idea of the perfect poem?

there is no such thing.

What's your best writing moment?

when the words arrive.

What's your worst writing moment?

when they forget themselves.

What time of the day do you mostly write?

all times.

What do you do to get into your writing sessions?

disembowel my brain stem, remove my clothes, eat nato with okra, masturbate, read, listen to miles davis (not necessarily in that order).

What's the weirdest place you ever wrote?

in a dungeon on a saturday surrounded by various forms of bdsm.

What's the weirdest thing you ever wrote on?

none of it's been weird. i'm just grateful that there are other things to write on besides paper. bodies. trees. buildings. bathroom doors. library books, refrigerators, on bread......

What book changed your writing forever?

blood and guts in high school by kathy acker.

What poet, dead or alive, would you like to be friends with?

tie between kathy acker and bukowski.

Behind The Inspired Word: Testimonial by Nichole Acosta

Behind The Inspired Word
Testimonial by Nichole Acosta

I’d like to point out first and foremost that my role as Director of Community Relations is an unpaid position. So why do I do it and what exactly do I do? Well, the fact is I love this series wholeheartedly because of what it has done for me that no other open mic series has and that is to say…it saved my life.

I have no reason whatsoever to lie to you about that because like I said this job does not afford me the privilege of eating the world’s finest caviar. But because it saved my life it makes it easier to do my job - which is to promote this series.

When I first came to an Inspired Word show, I had just gotten out of a really painful four-year relationship to say the least. I felt like shit - no, worse than shit - and the negative air around me was so thick, I couldn’t get out of bed at all some days, until I came to Inspired Word.

When you pay to get in the door you’re not being robbed or taken advantage of. You’re not being thrown into a lottery forced to listen to a few gems out of an awful bunch, hoping your number gets picked so you can play at a decent hour, if at all. You’re not forced to sit on top of one another like lobsters in a tank. You’re not asked to pay an outrageous drink minimum for a cup of ice and an ounce of alcohol. Being robbed means you get nothing in return, but here you get a whole network of artists willing to create and collaborate with you on any given night of the week, on the spot or in the future. The whole world is a lottery in one form or another so it’s comforting to know you never have to place your bets here…it’s always gonna be a great night. No one has to sit on anyone’s lap unless maybe you’re attending our monthly erotic show. GROWL. Oh and have you seen the size of that Bareburger mug?!

We’ve got discounts if you get on the mailing list and READ the newsletters and first timers who are not performing can get in free with my name at the door. Comedians can score $50 at the slam at the end of each month and poets can score $1000 plus recording studio time, and if you’re uber talented you might have the opportunity to be a part of an Inspired Word showcase show and get paid so what you pay at the door makes its way back to the artists!

Night after night I’ve watched amazingly talented people perform and exchange information to work together at a moment’s notice or in the near future. This is not a place where people should do their thing and leave. This is a place where people learn from one another and ask “How do I make my art better and can we work on something together soon?" - AND ACTUALLY MEAN IT. That’s magical! I myself met 12 epically talented individuals who after being blown away by their art and their good hearts, I decided to collaborate with for a full length show this Thursday at Sidewalk Café.

They are my family for life and the minute you walked in that door, you became a part of the Inspired Word family too! You can never have a big enough support system. Disregard any and all Nichole likes older men rumors. Mike Geffner is my mentor. Marvin Mendlinger is my crazy uncle. Nathan P is my cool wise uncle. The Ancient Mariner is my grandfather. Under 25 and over 35 need not apply. I’m gaining more and more creative brothers and sisters every time I come here. We will never take your money and not care if you ever come back because if you’re part of any real family, you will sincerely be missed if we haven’t seen you in awhile. But how fortunate we are to be able to have a family reunion and rock out together each and every week. So all I ask is that you leave the negativity and whatever preconceived notions you may have at the door and come on in. You’ll be inspired. I guarantee it.

Nichole Acosta is a poet, the founder of Epic XII, and The Inspired Word's Director of Community Relations.

A product of the streets of South Philadelphia, 70-something storyteller/poet Phillip Giambri aka The Ancient Mariner obtained his deviant perspective on life listening to Jean Shepherd on WOR radio back in the ‘50s. Fleeing Philly at seventeen, he served in the military, has been an actor, hairstylist, stoner, janitor, writer, drifter, recording engineer, hired hand, poet, traveling salesman, barfly, banker, biker, bronco buster, announcer, mail-order minister, photographer, and “Computer Guru.” He arrived in NY City in ’68, joined the Hippie pilgrimage to St. Marks Place, and never left. His self-published websites “Ancient Mariner Tales” and “Confessions of A Repeat Offender” offer bored web surfers a glimpse into his futile search for self-discovery and meaning. He can be found in downtown NYC, regularly spinning yarns and telling tall tales at The Inspired Word, Barnes & Noble, Black & White Bar, Kairos Poetry Café, Pianos, and anywhere else that will tolerate him. LTrain are native New Yorker's caught up in a romance with NYC. It's members, Crystalla Gonzalez (Vocals), and Gabriel Castellar (Guitar/Vocals) are of various ethnicities and cultures, and grew up on various genres of music like from Heavy Metal to Funk and from Jazz to Punk. This enabled them to blend all the different styles and cultures from people that can be found traveling through the NYC Subway. LTrain began in January of 2011 with a song called "On The Train" and a dream; A dream to make a funky rock band with a punk attitude, in which they interpreted as describing the spirit of NYC. "On The Train" was a song that Gabriel and Crystalla wrote as a project for Gabriel's creative writing class at his University (BMCC), which led to a vision about making music which described the sights, sounds and stories of people who rode the LTrain. LTrain began the NYC bar/venue circuit in March of 2011. In July of that year, both David and Chris became permanent members and by December of that year had already played in venues like The Knitting Factory, Don Pedro's, Trash Bar, The Bitter End, Gramercy Theatre and many more. L Train believes in spreading the message of love, understanding...and the funk. For more info on LTrain, please visit https://www.facebook.com/LTrainBand.

Repping the tough streets of the BX, Petey DeAbreu is a fast-rising star on the New York City comedy scene. He's a 3-time winner of The Inspired Word's LOL! Comedy Slam and has appeared at the Greenwich Village Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club, New York Comedy Club, and EastVille Comedy Club. He recognized the power of humor at an early age, using it as a pre-emptive strike to keep from getting beaten up at school and around his 'hood. With his unique view of the world, influenced by comedy legends Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and Woody Allen, Petey loves to take crowds on unexpected journeys and believes his feel-good style cuts through prejudice and provokes laughter without boundaries.

Janna graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in advertising, which she is applying wholeheartedly to her music career. Her brand, "Makeshift Popstar," is a clothing line including shirts, shoes and jewelry, as well as an attitude and mindset demonstrated by her low-budget high-creativity YouTube music video series, making Janna the world's first DIY-indie popstar. Her debut album, "Shameless Self-Promotion," is available on http://jannapelle.com/ as well as iTunes and Spotify. If you love pop music, you'll love her. If you hate pop music, you'll hate that you love her.

He’s attended too many schools to mention and blown several scholarships, studying nearly everything but without ever attaining a degree in anything. For more info on Phillip, please visit https://www.facebook.com/AncientMarinerTales.

2011 Individual World Poetry Slam Champ Chris August + Poet Stephanie Rogers & Open Mic - Wed, Jan. 25

The Inspired Word presents the 2011 Individual Word Poetry Slam Champion Chris August + spoken word poet Stephanie Rogers & our amazing 20-slot open mic open to all types of artists (comedians, musicians, storytellers, fiction/nonfiction writers, as well as poets and spoken word artists).

Hosted by HBO Def Poetry star Gemineye.

*****

BIOS:

Chris August was crowned the best performance poet in the country last year, winning the prestigious Individual World Poetry Slam in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a special educator, writer and activist from Baltimore, Maryland. He has been involved in the national performance poetry community since 2002, and has been published in numerous collections and toured and competed throughout most of the country.

*****

A spoken word performer, former competitive storyteller and a Twitter-wiseass, Stephanie Rogers realized her love for the written word early, reciting poetry in her community church. However, thanks to a congregation member appropriating a particular favorite reading, she was inspired to create her own poetic works. Since receiving her Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Mount St. Vincent, she has been published in the Iliad Press Anthology “MUSES” and Playboy Magazine, participated in workshops with Cave Canem and Urban Word, and has performed in open-mic poetry events in New York and New Jersey. She’s been a featured performer at STARK Wide Open, as well as the famed Nuyorican Poets Café. Recently she’s been embraced by the The Inspired Word community, as well as the Open Mic Joint and considers both venues her poet/performer homes. Her first book, “Just Something I’ve Got to Say”, dedicated to the middle-finger moments of city living, loving and writing will be released in January 2012. Her ambition is to take her poetry to the four corners of the US (perhaps two in Canada), to finish and produce the one-act plays she started in college, and to use her writing in a positive fashion; a little scathing, sometimes amusing, but always inspiring.

Currently she’s a writer, of many short stories, and is working on a novel about love, sex & NYC. Producer of a new reality show “Housewives of the East Village” (in the works), she’s an unabashed lover of filth and the written word, likes to talk to the dead, and strives for purity. She still resides in the East Village with her family. For more info, please visit http://www.lzhansen.com.
