Spoken Word Legend Taalam Acey Headlines + Author John Reed + Open Mic - Wed, Nov. 7
The Inspired Word presents spoken word legend Taalam Acey + author John Reed + our amazing 20-slot open mic open to all types of artists (comedians, musicians as well as poets).

BIOS:
Spoken word legend Taalam Acey, a child of the Newark Rebellion, was raised by a single mother who was a member of the famed writer and activist Amiri Baraka’s community organization. Acey is an independent artist whose work has been featured frequently on TV One and was selected as the original "number one thing you need to know about" on BET's countdown show, "The 5ive." Over the years, BET has featured and aired roughly a half dozen segments featuring Acey. The Newark, NJ native’s poetry has appeared in Essence Magazine, and Susan Taylor, the magazine’s Editor Emeritus, personally invited him to perform for an audience of six thousand at The Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.
Acey was selected as the initial presenter for the inaugural Baltimore TEDx. He was also the curator of the 2011 Sacred Circle Cafe at New Jersey's most prestigious theater, the NJ Performing Arts Center. He was honored to be a guest of Congresswoman Maxine Waters for the Congressional Black Caucus' 2007 & 2008 "Young Gifted and Black" panels. He has shared his work in several countries and approximately one hundred schools of higher education; including the esteemed Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley, where he delivered a lecture on contemporary Spoken Word. He is currently curating an event called "Sacred Circle Cafe" for the upcoming 2012 Dodge Poetry Festival.
He has recorded fifteen CDs and authored four books. Additionally, films that include his work have garnered an Audience Award (2002) and a Special Jury Prize (2006) at the Sundance Film Festival. He was featured in an acclaimed Radio-One London slam poetry documentary and Marc Smith, the founder of slam poetry, used Acey's work in his definitive book. He currently resides in Sacramento, California

He is a current member of the board of directors of the National Book Critics Circle.

BIOS:
Spoken word poet Beau Sia
has toured Europe and the U.S. and was one of the true superstars on
HBO Def Poetry. He authored the poetry book A Night Without Armor II:
The Revenge as well as the spoken word CD's Attack! Attack! Go! and Dope
and Wack. His work also appears in numerous anthologies including Bum
Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, and he has appeared in several
documentary films, Slamnation, Slam, and Race is the Place. He was
featured in the 2000 ESPN X Games and on Hardball with Chris Matthews,
Last Call with Carson Daly, Showtime at the Apollo, The Today Show, and
The Tony Awards. His film career expanded to include Hitch, with Will
Smith, and The Manchurian Candidate, with Denzel Washington. He is one
of the original cast members in Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, a 2003
Special Event Tony Award Winner.

People With Teeth is a hip-hop/punk outfit based out of Brooklyn, NY. Signature songs like "Glenn Beck is Dead" have earned the group a reputation as an aggressive, satirically political trio combining hip-hop music with punk attitude and spoken word elements. Comprised of accomplished spoken word artists, emcees and performers, People With Teeth has made a splash in certain NYC hip-hop, spoken word and comedy circles as a daring, eclectic and wildly fun collective.

Spoken Word Poet Dwayne Morgan @ Mike Geffner Presents The Inspired Word, Thursday, July 7, 2011 @ One and One Bar/Restaurant, Nexus Lounge, Manhattan, NYC.
Dwayne Morgan began his career as a spoken word artist in 1993. In 1998, Morgan received both the African Canadian Achievement Award and the Harry Jerome Award for Excellence in the Arts. He is also the winner of three Canadian Urban Music Awards (2001, 2003, 2005). In 2005 he was recognized as Poet of Honour at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in Vancouver. In 2008 Morgan's contribution to the Arts and Canadian society were recognized on the Official Black History Month poster.

Bios:
Oveous is a recording artist who tricked everyone into believing he was only a poet. He grew up in the Bronx and Washington Heights exposed to the richness of jazz, soul, hip hop, and latin music. An honorary member of the world-famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Oveous shares his own brand of "rap & spokenword". He became a National Poetry slam finalist three years in a row, is a multiple time winner at the Apollo Theater, has performed on the hit series HBO Def Poetry, and has recorded music with grammy award winner Louie Vega. Vaimoana Litia Makakaufaki Niumeitolu is a poet, painter, actor, activist, and educator. She was born in Nuku‘alofa, Tonga; raised in Hawai‘i and Utah; and now lives, creates, and loves in New York City. Moana is the author of a poetry, performance text, and visual art chapbook, tonga provo harlem. She is a co-founding member of the women of color performance troupe, Mahina Movement, which has performed at more than 400 stages. Their CD is Speak the Fire. moana has shared her poetry and painting across the U.S. and in Fiji, Tonga, Ireland, Italy, and South Africa. She has been seen acting at the Metropolitan Opera and sharing her one-woman show, Tongue-in Paint, which had its world premiere in the soloNOVA Arts Festival at Performance Space 122 in NYC. Her other production, A Prayer for Tonga, premiered at Harvard University. She graduated from New York University, earned the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship from Yale University, and attended Columbia University’s M.F.A. Program in Acting.

Geoff Kagan Trenchard has performed poetry on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, at universities throughout the United States and in numerous detention facilities. As a mentor for Urban Word NYC, he taught weekly poetry workshops in the foster care center at Bellevue. He has also taught creative writing workshops in Rikers Island with Columbia University’s “Youth Voices on Lockdown” Program and helped run the first ever poetry slam at San Quentin Penitentiary. The National Poetry Slam Anthology, Kitchen Sink Magazine, The Nervous Breakdown, Word Riot, The Worcester Review, November 3rd and 12th Street have published his poems and essays. He is a recipient of a fellowship from the Riggio Writing and Democracy program at the New School and the first ever louderARTS Writing Fellowship. As a member of the performance poetry troupe The Suicide Kings, he has toured internationally with their hip-hop theater piece “In Spite of Everything.” He currently works as a guidance counselor at an alternative high school in Brooklyn.
Erica Miriam Fabri is a poet and performer and the author of "Dialect of a Skirt." She performs solo and as the hybrid music & poetry duo "The Robin & the Lady Poet" with the musician Robin Andre. She teaches writing & performance workshops at various colleges and universities. She lives in the bright, shiny & beautiful land of New York City. Sean McNally’s work has appeared, among other places, in Black Book, Exquisite Corpse, LIT, Open City, Painted Bride Quarterly, Quick Fiction, The Story of My Scab, Unsaid, and Washington Square, as well as in The United States of Poetry anthology and online at Filled with Chocolate Pudding, The Awl, and Wordsmoker. A short musical play, Get to Know Your Presidential Pets, was staged at the 92nd Street Y in 2004. He is currently up to something, and no good will come of it.

Socially awkward with +87 charm points Omar "Ion" Holmon can usually be found standing in a Comic book store hallway talking about how he be in Comic book stores all day. His Slam trading card states accomplishments such as: 2010 Urbana Grandslam champion, 2009 Nuyorican Grandslam champion, Loserslam Grandslam champion (2009,2008).
Ilya Khodosh is a writer and performer in New York. He performs with the improv collective Rural Juror, and his work will be featured in the literary anthology NEXTbook, to be published this fall. He had previously toured nationwide as a company member of the storytelling/spoken word show, Vanessa Hiary's Monologues. Ilya was awarded a Hutchinson Fellowship in theater at Williams College (2008), and top honors at the Dialogue One Theater Festival (2007). He is the chief theater critic for the Berkshire Review for the Arts. He is the associate artistic director of the solo performance festival, United Solo, to take place in New York this November.
Standing 5-foot-6 by the fourth grade, Margot Leitman developed a thick skin and a sharp sense of humor instead of learning how to play basketball. Measuring 5-foot-10 today, Margot’s off beat, brutally honest, fearless comedy has earned her two ECNY “Best Female Stand Up” nominations and the “Joke of the Week” in Time Out New York. She’s appeared as various characters, including the cult favorite Gynoblast on “Late Night With Conan O’ Brien,” in addition to appearances on VH1’s “Best Week Ever,” ESPN’s “Cheap Seats,” AMC, the Style Network, E!, Comedy Central, MTV and NBC Broadband. Every month she and Giulia Rozzi co-host the wildly popular, monthly, sex-themed storytelling show “Stripped Stories." Margot has been featured in Glamour Magazine, and the books “Fifty Dates Worse Than Yours” and “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Jokes.” She has written online for the Lifetime Network, College Humor.com, EHow.com and in print for Playgirl Magazine. She currently teaches storytelling through the UCB Theatre.
Shappy Seasholtz is the current Slam-Master of NYC-URBANA poetry slam series which runs every Tuesday at 7PM at the BOWERY POETRY CLUB where Shappy is also the surly barkeep. He's the head Dungeon Master of Spoken Nerd and runs the NERD SLAM every year at the National Poetry Slam. He has 12 long boxes of comics, over 100 Viewmaster reels and a complete run of Wacky Packages. He has been seen in DEF POETRY, SLAM PLANET and most recently as a Trekkie in the film FANBOYS. He can be heard on INDIEFEED SPOKEN-WORD PODCAST. He toured this past fall with the Elephant High-Dive Revival tour with WRITE BLOODY PRESS. He is the Chosen One.
