4-Time HBO Def Poet Kevin Coval on L-vis Lives! Book Tour + Singer NaJah Lewis + Open Mic - Thursday, Sept. 1

Kevin Coval is the author of ALA “Book of the Year” finalist Slingshots: A Hip-Hop Poetica, a collection titled Everyday People, and L-Vis Lives: Racemusic Poems (forthcoming). He is co-founder and Artistic Director of Louder Than a Bomb: The Chicago Teen Poetry Festival, subject of an award-winning documentary of the same name, premiering on the Oprah Winfrey Network October 2011. A regular contributor to Chicago Public Radio, and a four-time HBO Def Poet, Coval teaches at the School of the Art Institute and in high schools around Chicago.
L-vis Lives! is a bold new collection of poetry and prose exploring the collision of race, art, and appropriation in hip hop culture. L-vis is an imagined persona: a representation of artists who have used and misused Black music. Like so many others who gained fame and fortune from their sampling, L-vis is as much a sincere artist as he is a thief. In Kevin Coval's poems, L-vis' story is equal parts autobiography, forgotten history, and re-imaginings. We see shades of Elvis Presley, the Beastie Boys, and Eminem, and meet some of history's more obscure “whiteboy” heroes and anti-heroes: legendary breakdancers, political activists, and music impresarios. A story of both artistic theft and radical invention, L-vis Lives! is a poetic novella on all of the possibilities and problems of “post-racial” American culture.
You can order the book through this link - http://www.haymarketbooks.org/pb/L-vis-Lives
*****
Props for L-vis Lives!
"...part social aesthetic-activist determined to continue the Unfinished, Collected Works of John Brown, Coval has proven, at a time when many poets use metaphor and restraint to tiptoe around the tough issues of identity and borrowed race, that most L-vises have Souls."
—Thomas Sayers Ellis, author, Skin, Inc.: Identity Repair Poems
“Nothing like it has ever been written. No one really talks about these white men of color. No one considers their origins or the source of their craving. No one has bothered to label this pursuit of Blackness a meaningful tribute or a persistent dysfunction. L-vis Lives! is a cultural touchstone, a book that will easily move into a space that’s been waiting for much too long.”
—Patricia Smith, author, Blood Dazzler, finalist for the National Book Award
"Tough and smart, real and surreal, aching and funny, in-the-tradition and startlingly original, the trials of L-Vis show us the challenges of giving up on whiteness--a process at once monumentally hard, too easy, and absolutely necessary."
—David Roediger, author, How Race Survived U.S. History

CheRae Chaney: Poem "Proposal"
Proposal by CheRae Chaney
As I write by my windowsill
My mind is taken hostage by the lights that broke in.
Their continuous sights make themselves at home on my paper
Now tie dyed with the reds and greens of street lights and
The white and yellow eyes of cars.
While I hug my pillow and think of the future
My heart can’t help but sink at the reality
That this is not my home, only a three month stay.
But I want to share my poetry and learn at the University,
But my enrollment hollers at me with my commitments right behind.
But my life and I have just met and I don’t want it to be a one night stand.
I want to marry the city with all its lights and glory,
The employment, the people, and even the smell.
We all have baggage but I think your matches mine well.
Although time is not in our favor, and from what I hear
You have a track record for breaking hearts, destroying dreams,
And hazing newcomers. Well as another one of your lovers,
I want to prepare you, because you have never had me before.
Big Apple you don’t scare me!
The roar that comes from this city is loud,
But I will drown it out with a determined battle cry!
And with my quick feet I will never succumb to the city crowd.
As awkward as I may be little girl from the suburbs of VA
I’ll still greet the city slicker with a smile and a “hey”
NYC I hope your ready for me,
Because everyone said to get ready for you
And I assimilated long enough to tell that who I really am
And who you are gets along pretty well.
You have the diversity I have the worldly understanding,
You bring the lights, I’ll give you the show,
You have the rumors and I have the doubt
And together we can prove them both wrong.
But three months was not really enough time.
But I used every second to learn, every minute to grow,
Everyday to listen and every night to write.
Write by my window, in my bed hugging my pillow;
The only time I don’t challenge the city and let it take hostage my mind
While I propose with my words and get down on one knee
I ask that the love of my life, NYC
Will you marry me?
George Carlin's Spoken Word Gem "Modern Male"
"I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke-free. A diversified multicultural, postmodern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been uplinked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a hightech lowlife. A cutting edge, state of the art, bicoastal multitasker, and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond!
"I’m new wave, but I’m old school, and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hotwired, heatseeking, warmhearted cool customer, voice-activated and biodegradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.
"Behind the eight ball, ahead of the curve, ridin' the wave, dodgin' the bullet and pushin' the envelope. I’m on point, on task, on message and off drugs. I’ve got no need for coke and speed. I've got no urge to binge and purge. I’m in the moment, on the edge, over the top and under the radar. A high concept, low profile, medium range ballistic missionary. A streetwise smart bomb. A top gun bottom feeder. I wear power ties, I tell power lies, I take power naps and run victory laps. I’m a totally ongoing big-foot, slam dunk, rainmaker with a proactive outreach. A raging workaholic. A working rageaholic. Out of rehab and in denial!
"I’ve got a personal trainer, a personal shopper, a personal assistant and a personal agenda. You can’t shut me up. You can’t dumb me down because I’m tireless and I’m wireless, I’m an alpha male on beta blockers.
"I’m a nonbeliever and an overachiever, laid back but fashion forward. Upfront, downhome, low rent, high maintenance. Supersized, long lasting, high definition, fast acting, oven ready and built to last. I’m a hands-on, footloose, kneejerk head case pretty maturely post-traumatic, and I’ve got a love child that sends me hate mail.
"But I’m feeling, I’m caring, I’m healing, I’m sharing-- a supportive, bonding, nurturing primary caregiver. My output is down, but my income is up. I took a short position on the long bond and my revenue stream has its own cashflow. I read junk mail, I eat junk food, I buy junk bonds and I watch trash sports. I’m gender-specific, capital intensive, user-friendly and lactose intolerant.
"I like rough sex. I like tough love. I use the 'F' word in my e-mails and the software on my harddrive is hardcore - no soft porn.
"I bought a microwave at a mini-mall; I bought a minivan at a megastore. I eat fast food in the slow lane. I’m toll-free, bitesized, ready-to-wear and I come in all sizes. A fully equipped, factory authorized, hospital tested, clinically proven, scientifically- formulated medical miracle. I’ve been pre-washed, pre-cooked, pre-heated, pre-screened, pre-approved, pre-packaged, post-dated, freeze-dried, double-wrapped, vacuum-packed and I have an unlimited broadband capacity.
"I’m a rude dude, but I’m the real deal. Lean and mean! Cocked, locked and ready to rock. Rough, tough and hard to bluff. I take it slow, I go with the flow, I ride with the tide. I’ve got glide in my stride. Drivin' and movin', sailin' and spinnin', jivin' and groovin', wailin' and winnin'. I don’t snooze, so I don’t lose. I keep the pedal to the metal and the rubber on the road. I party hearty and lunch time is crunch time. I’m hangin' in, there ain’t no doubt and I’m hangin' tough, over and out!"

Influenced by their strong faith in God as well as such legendary musicians as The Fugees, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, and Bob Marley, these are artists dedicated to righting the world with their words.
